How Chiropractic Care Can Help During Pregnancy
For many moms pregnancy can be physically taxing on their bodies, myself included. My first pregnancy I was the pregnant lady everyone hated. I barely gained weight, I only had morning sickness in the morning for the first tirmester and I didn't show until 7 months. Four months after my daughter was born and I woke up one day and could not move my legs with out crying because my hips hurt so much. Something was wrong. It resolved on it's own after a few days. But I will never forget that excruciating pain.
Fast forward a few years later and talking with a Chiropractor, I found out my hips are crooked. I dismissed it at the time, until recently when another Chiropractor told me the same thing....
That Chiropractor would be Dr. Rick Calcara at Calcara Family Practice. Dr. Calcara took the time, to show me around his practice and discuss with me how chiropractic care can be beneficial to expecting mothers, and newborns. Dr. Calcara demonstrated how his tables can be adjusted to fit pregnant bodies and discussed the Webster technique. He took the opportunity to show me how my spine worked (or apparently isn't working) and the diagnostic tools that are used to see which area's need work, and what nerves are affected. His office even has their own massage therapist.
Cool, so how can Chiropractic care help?
Remember how I said pregnancy can be physically taxing? Growing and birthing another human can cause strain on the spine. And what does the spine do? A lot of things. But it's main job is to protect the spinal cord that transport signals from our brain to the rest of our body. If our spine is out of alignment, our nerves get pinched and may not function optimally which can lead to a number of issues including discomfort.

Dr. Calcara was not only trained using the Webster method, but he trained with Dr. Websterwho founded the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. Dr Larry Webster discovered how to restore proper pelvic balance and function.
"Dr. Webster reported that when a mother sought care and her baby was in a breech position, the restoration of pelvic neuro-biomechanics with this adjustment also frequently facilitated optimal fetal positioning. There are cases published in the chiropractic literature that support this theory. More research is needed and is currently underway by the ICPA."
"Chiropractic spinal and pelvic adjustments can reduce or resolve pregnancy discomforts such as back pain, hip pain, sciatica, and heartburn. Chiropractic helps with optimal fetal positioning by helping the pelvis to be symmetrical. This in turn helps the uterus to be more symmetrical. Adjustments can help the baby to fit the brim better to engage in time to help stimulate cervical ripening. Adjustments also make the pelvis more flexible so that pelvic joints move more easily in labor."

Newborns and Children Benefit too!
Even the calmest birth puts an amazing amount of pressure on the babies head, that pressure can change how the spine aligns and cause the baby to have colic or reflex, not want to nurse, or prefer to nurse on one side. Chiropractors use a very gentle amount of pressure to realign the spine.
Other times misalignment can come from little things like how we change diapers or hold our babies.
