What are the best Prenatal Vitamins? (Plus a bonus recipe for Addrenal Fatigue Juice)

Congratulations you are pregnant.....or you are beginning the exciting journey of trying to get pregnant.  One of the first things anyone will tell you to do is start taking a prenatal vitamin.  Folic Acid is important!  With my first pregnancy I found myself standing in the vitamin aisle dazed, confused and nauseous about what prenatal I should buy.  Should I get the one with DHA?  What about the Omega one?  Should I get the cheapest one?  And then those bastards made me sick(er)!

I was terrible about taking my prenatal.  I dreaded it.  By my second pregnancy I read all the reviews on the options for vegan prenatals, and I took an extra B12 vitamin (because a pregnant vegan can very easily become B12 deficient.)  Again they made me nauseous, so I gave up.  Instead I focused on adjusting my diet.

Prenatals are taken to help your body when your diet is lacking in a certain area.  I think you should talk with your healthcare provider about what prenatal or supplements are right for you.  For me, prenatals made me sick.  So they were not worth taking if I was just going to throw them up.  So instead I took the time to track my food.  A great, and free way to do this is with Cronometer

This is not mine, just an example, and doesn't seem to be a full day.

Cronometer is customize-able.  You can fit it to a raw vegan diet, paleo, pregnancy, even lactation.  There are options for everything.  You can build recipes and put in how much you ate to help show what your macro and micro nutrients are.   You can even add in your prenatal vitamin or supplements to make sure you are not getting too much of something.

My 3 Food Rules

  1. Eat whole foods, mostly plants.
  2. Your grocery store cart should be mostly filled with produce.
  3. Avoid processed food.

Adrenal Fatigue Juice

Pregnancy can make you tired.  Especially if you have decided to give up caffeine.  I found that this drink helped give me so much energy.  People complimented me on how my skin was glowing, but I think it was all the carrot and beet juice.  If you have gestational diabetes this drink does contain a lot of fruit sugar.  Try using little to no pineapple/apple.

What you need:

  • Juicer
  • 4-5 carrots
  • 1/2 beet
  • Small handful fresh watercress
  • 3 green apples
  • 1/2 pinapple
  • 4 stalks celary
  • 1 cucumber
  • Juice of one lemon (DO NOT include the peel)

Juice all items together in your juicer and sip throughout the day.
